The Drifters' singer goes solo for this masterpiece about loss and seeking redemption. Apologies for the Youtube video, like "Bernadette." Just pay attention to the song.
When the night has come/And the land is dark/And the moon is the only light we'll see/No, I won't be afraid/No, I won't be afraid/Just as long as you stand by me.Now we're getting into hymn territory--those lines are a plea, clasped palms to the Heavens. Listening to the melody, you can feel the terror of night and dark clouds over you, while he's waiting for his woman to join him and to find protection in their unity. I don't have as much to say here, because this is sort of a conclusion to what I've been saying with the last few songs. This guy is totally lost, groundless, and has no idea who he is. He has just one slight hope for love and he's clinging to it, in the wilderness, without understanding where he is. What makes this guy more mature is when he says, "Whenever you're in trouble/Won't you stand by me." He realizes that she needs him as much as he needs her. He has the strength to help. As we get to songs from the female perspective, we'll see that they're generally more knowledgeable and formed in this area. But this character's not bad. I particularly like the nature imagery, if you read the whole lyric.
